Science Writer — MD

Brief description of job duties

The American Institute of Physics (AIP) is seeking a Science Writer who will cover the latest research news in physics, astronomy, and related fields. The successful candidate will serve as a key member on a busy team of science writers and media relations professionals. The individual will write a large number of news releases, news items, and feature stories on a diverse range of science topics for a general audience and targeted at print, broadcast, and online journalists. The successful candidate will also interact with journalists at a variety of news media, pitch stories, and help organize and operate newsrooms for AIP Member Society meetings. The individual will also support other projects in the AIP Media & Government Relations Division as assigned.

Qualifications

Candidates should have either a bachelor's degree in a relevant field of science, technology, engineering, or mathematics and relevant experience in writing or communications, or a bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, writing, or public relations. Some previous experience in science writing and/or media relations is required. Experience in newsroom journalism is highly desirable.

Solid writing and editing skills, good news judgment, and the ability to produce completed high-quality written work in an independent fashion under tight deadlines are required. The candidate should have the capacity to communicate breaking science research appearing in journals and scientific meetings to a general audience as well as the desire and ability to interact effectively with professional journalists in broadcast, internet, and print media. The ability to work on several projects simultaneously and to work in a team environment is required.
